Q: Do I need track experience to come to Lapping Days events?
A: Nope! We have 3 class room sessions, and 20 on-track driving instructors. We pair each novice and intermediate student with an instructor during our morning meeting. The instructor rides along with you, giving pointers in real time. Instructors suggest brake and turning points, and guidance in cornering skills. We give you confidence and knowledge, and most important, we keep you safe on track.
Q: Do women come to your events?
A: Absolutely. We’ve had many women attend Lapping Days events, and being excellent listeners, they progress very well.
Q: What kind of cars do people bring?
A: We have everything from Ford Escort to a Ferrari F430. Any late model, hard top, sport performance street car with a manual transmission will do very well. First timers have come out with Nissan Altima’s or Chrysler 300′s with an automatic transmission and had a great time. You will be surprised at the performance of a well driven street car. They are very capable.
Q: What should I bring to my first track day?
A: A safe car, a comfortable lawn chair, a hat, and sunscreen. The ACE Cafe is open for lunch, we provide all the water you can drink.
Q: What helmet do you require?
A: We strongly suggest you invest in a Snell approved 2005 or 2010 full face helmet. You can buy these locally at the M Squared Kart Shop in Salt Lake City. If this is your first day and you don’t want to buy a helmet, you can rent one for the day when you register.
Q: What about bringing my convertible?
A: Late model convertibles with “factory roll over protection” are allowed in the beginner and intermediate groups. No convertibles without a roll bar or cage in the advanced group. Call us with questions.
Q: Are track days dafe?
A: Yes. In our opinion, they are far safer than driving on the street. We have a mandatory morning driver’s meeting to explain the rules for the day, strict on-track behavior requirements, and passing rules for all drivers, flag corner workers to give you the heads up if needed, tow vehicles and ambulance on site (which of course, you will not need), and track day insurance just in case.
Q: Will my car be ok?
A: If you drive like we teach, your car will return home in the same condition it arrived. Lapping Days provides class and on-track instruction, teaching a critical driving skill: Smooth inputs make for a fun, fast day, conserving tires, brakes and engine.
Q: Do I need special tires? Do tire pressures change?
A: Street tires are perfectly acceptable and perform very well at the correct pressures. Ignore the door sill or idiot light suggestion, and run 38-40 psi hot, checking pressure after your first and second sessions on track. Start all four tires at 32-34 psi, knowing that pressures will increase as heat builds at speed on track.
Q: Can I drive my friends around on track?
A: In one short word, no. The only passenger in your car will be an instructor, with you driving … or you, with the instructor doing a few slow, safe demonstration laps and with your permission.
Q: Do you have an advanced driving group for experienced DE and Race drivers?
A: Yes, our Yellow Group is specifically tailored for experienced, polite drivers. The Yellow Group is much quicker than the others on track, and more aware of other cars as well. Passing rules are a bit more relaxed, with the emphasis on safe cooperation everywhere on track. While the Yellow Group is quick, it is not about horsepower. We have excellent drivers in everything from track prepared street legal cars, to race Miata’s and GT3 Cup cars.
If you are experienced, but new to Miller, we’d be happy to do some lead follow or in car instructing to help you get up to speed.
